EVA’s Monthly U.S. Railroad Coal Report tracks the coal business of the four major U.S. railroads — CSX, Norfolk Southern, BNSF, and Union Pacific — combining Surface Transportation Board carload data with EVA’s proprietary utility stockpile estimates to provide a complete picture of coal movements from mine to plant. Each issue covers recent performance and extends through a quarterly forecast horizon.

Each report includes:

  • Monthly coal carloads, tonnage, revenue, and revenue per car for each railroad, with prior-year, prior-month, and YTD comparisons
  • Tonnage breakdowns by coal supply basin (NAPP, CAPP/SAPP, ILB, PRB, Rockies, Lignite) and end market (utility, export met, export thermal, other domestic)
  • Quarterly forecasts of railroad coal tonnage and revenue through the following year
  • Utility coal burn, receipts, and stockpile levels for plants served by each railroad, segmented by supply basin
  • Days-of-burn metrics benchmarked against 12-month averages and 2-year historical comparisons
  • Cross-railroad summaries of utility coal burn, receipts, and stocks by delivering carrier and transportation mode (rail, barge, vessel, truck/conveyor)
  • Railroad system maps showing current-month utility coal receipts by plant location and supply basin
  • A market commentary covering key drivers of coal burn, stockpile conditions, and the export outlook
